A Glossary of Draughts

This glossary gathers the chief terms of the game into one place, that the reader may not be delayed by unfamiliar expressions.

It is meant to attend the history, Payne, Torquemada, and 1756 law pages, and to keep the reader rightly oriented throughout the archive.

Draughts

The historical and international name for the game often called checkers in North America.

Alquerque

An ancient capture game widely treated as one of the principal ancestors of draughts.

Compulsory Capture

The rule by which a player must take a capture when one is lawfully available.

Touch-Move

A rule convention in which touching a piece binds the player to its move, subject to the laws in force.

Single Corner

The solitary dark corner square often used as a defensive anchor in discussion and endgame study.

King

A piece promoted to move backward after reaching the far edge.

Huffing

The act of removing an opponent's piece for failing to capture.

Double Corner

The two dark squares at the right-hand side of each player's board.

Crown Head

The furthest row of squares from a player where kings are created.

Man

A single piece that has not yet been promoted to a King.
